Laser crystals serve as an amplification medium for solid-state lasers.
They typically consist of a single crystal doped with rare earth ions.
These ions are responsible for the laser process.
A high-quality laser crystal is characterized by its high optical purity, high surface quality (approx. λ/8) and the correct doping concentration depending on the application.
Depending on the requirements, there are laser crystals of different shapes and forms.
Frequently used geometries are Cylinders, rods, prisms or disks.
