Laser crystals serve as an amplification medium for solid-state lasers. They typically consist of a single crystal doped with rare earth ions. These ions are responsible for the laser process. A high-quality laser crystal is characterized by its high optical purity, high surface quality (approx. λ/8) and the correct doping concentration depending on the application, and there are laser crystals of different shapes and forms depending on the requirements. Frequently used geometries are: Cylinders, rods, prisms or disks.
